Chlorine Process vs Oxygen Process on Linen Life

Postby suds-n-blood » Sat Dec 31, 2011 1:39 pm

Can anyone shed some insight on the effects on the life of typical hospitality linen when using an Oxygen bleach process versus the typical chlorine bleaching process.

All things being equal with regard to mechanical action, type of washer, finishing process, etc.; what is the percentage advantage one over the other??

Thanks

I can judge by our plant cleanliness. We have had less lint since going to peroxide. Must mean the linen is breaking down less. :D

Chlorine is a very reactive chemical. Any Temperature above 165 deg is causing significant damage to the linen. Any residual Chlorine in the linen will cause damage to it when subjected to the high temps of the Dryers and Ironers. You require a high temp for Chlorine to work (150deg) where peracetic acid, Hydrogen peroxide or Ozone requires far less temperatures (80- 100 deg). These are also safe on most color linens. It is also less damaging to the linen thus as bloodgutsandglory stated far less lint in your plant.

Just curious, can you say the laundry is "hygienically clean" in temps that low?

The Chlorine and Peroxide bleaches kill bacteria from the concentration and reactivity. Higher temperatures and PH can cause a higher reaction which can also harm the linen. We want to kill the germs but get the most of our linen. Lower temps a little higher concentration and longer exposure to the chemical will result in the same effectiveness. You get the same result; you just have to maintain the formula... Time - Chemical - Temperature - Mechanical Action - Dilution
